The Story Behind Radiant Skeins

Radiant Skeins is born out of my love of color. I have been knitting and crocheting for more than 25 years and over those years I have become obsessed with yarn and more specifically: Colorful Yarn! This is where Radiant Skeins comes in. We believe that life is too short to craft with boring supplies!

My journey with yarn began long before the first skein was ever speckled with dye in my kitchen. It started with quiet evenings spent unraveling the mysteries of knitting needles and crochet hooks, learning by trial, error, and plenty of patience. I learned first to crochet from my mother when I was just about 13. Back then I didn’t know quite where to place my stitches, so I made a lot of backpack-style bags as my stitches slowly decreased down to a cone shape. I thought they were great, however comically they were created.

When I got older, I learned where to place those stitches, and then how to read a pattern. Later I learned how to knit, and a true love of creating with yarn was born! There was something meditative about the gentle rhythm of looping yarn, a sense of accomplishment that grew with each finished project.

The leap from hobbyist to artisan was gradual. I fell in love with merino wool yarn and became a bit of a yarn snob and most definitely a yarn collector. Then I learned about dyeing yarn on my own online. This sparked a curiosity—what if I could create not just with stitches, but with color itself? The idea of dyeing my own yarn opened up an entirely new world of creative possibilities.

I started dying yarn back in 2009. It started with experimenting with different yarn bases, figuring out how the dye took to different blends, experimenting with heat and water temperatures, different dyes, and different ways to apply dye to yarn to come out with different effects. To say I loved it was an understatement. I loved to see how the colors related to one another on the yarn. Seeing the colors come alive and having a finished product at the end of the day was exhilarating!

From my Etsy store, I offered hand painted yarn, self-striping yarns in many combinations (such as yarns that striped in specific stripe patterns and yarns that changed in color from one end of the hank to the other), and custom-dyed yarn. Custom dyeing was my favorite! I loved working with my customers to create a color palette all their own, sometimes working from their imagination or others working from pictures they sent to me. Some of these colorways ended up in my regular inventory and became quite popular!

I soon began purchasing large quantities of yarn and dyes and I was off on a mission to make an income out of my pursuits and that’s what I did. I was a stay-at-home mom of two, so during the day while I was home with two small children in preschool, I would dye yarn in my kitchen and offer it up online. I made a little business out of it, and soon I was selling my yarn!

It was a prosperous little business for a while. I ran a successful Etsy store for about a year, until life granted me a second little boy and I closed my shop due to the demands of pregnancy and motherhood. In another year I was blessed with another daughter, and I went along with being a busy mom of FOUR for the next 13 years or so!

Now two of those children have grown up and graduated high school. My son is 19, already working away from home as a welder and I’m immensely proud! My daughter is 18 and figuring out what she wants to do now that she’s finished high school. This leaves me with a lot more time and I have gone back to the dye pots and started up my little business again with the intention of making this big!

We started our own domain, and I have been bringing my yarn around to local craft fairs where it has made quite a splash and I have come close to selling out at every event which has been very exciting. We also started offering custom orders again which we have been gathering at the craft fairs, but we are looking to expand!

Look for our Kickstarter project! Coming August 2025!!!
